The Homebrew Launcher, or HBL, by Dimok is the primary way that the average user should run Homebrew apps at this time. It has a few limitations, but overall it is comparable to the Wii's Homebrew Channel.

The most common way to get Homebrew up and running, is to download HBL and any apps your want to the SD card, and then run the gx2sploit from the Wii U's browser. This can be done through one of several exploit sites, or by self-hosting (see below).

Step 1: Installing Aroma
Aroma is installed onto to an SD card. Aroma can be installed here . Install PayloadLoader Installer here. Extract the contents of the newly downloaded aroma zips and copy them to the SD Card. Select merge to merge the files of the zip files, then copy the PayloadLoaderInstaller.wuhb file (inside a different ZIP file) into /wiiu/apps
Step 1: Installing HBL and apps
HBL is installed to an SD card, as per the notice at the top of this page. There are a few options on how to install it to the SD card:

Option A: Copy the files to your SD card
This method requires a computer. To "install" the Homebrew Launcher, you only need to ensure that it is in the appropriate spot on the SD Card. Download the zip file from the release page and copy the "wiiu" folder to the root of the SD card. It must be formatted as FAT32.

Option B: Visit wiiubru.com/go
This method can be done on the Wii U directly. Insert a FAT32 formatted SD card into the Wii U, and then visit http://wiiubru.com/go on your Wii U in the browser. This requires the latest Wii U firmware 5.5.1. After going there, click the "Let's go" button, and then download HBL from the menu that pops up. If no menu comes up within 2 minutes, try it again.

After putting the SD card in the Wii U make sure you are connected to the Internet. After confirming you are connected to the Internet open the Internet Browser and go to wiiuexploit.xyz . click the "Run Exploit!" button and hold the B button until a menu appears. if your Wii U is frozen wait a few seconds. if nothing happens reboot the console and reset the Browser's save data and retry this step

Step 3: Creating a NAND Backup
This method requires an Internet connection. The exploit site is responsible for executing the downloaded files that are on the SD card. There are several public exploit sites available. Due to the nature of the kernel exploit, some sites may perform better than others. These sites must be opened on the Wii U by using the system's built-in browser.

Option B: Self-host
This method does not require an Internet connection. Rather than using an exploit site hosted by someone else, you can directly host the exploit packages on your computer. You can also try the web hosting zip resource from from Dimok.

Installing the PayloadLoader allows you to access Aroma by running the "Health and Safety Information" app. After putting the SD card back in the Wii U repeat Step 2 except hold X instead of B. Once you are back on the Wii U Menu, launch the PayloadLoader Installer (the one with the big, blue A on it) from the Wii U Menu. Press A to check if there is an Installation. then press A to select Install / Update. Afterward you'll be asked if you are sure you want to install the PayloadLoader. Use the D-Pad to select Install and press A.

Blocking updates
As opposed to the Wii, the Wii U console will automatically update itself when a new firmware version is released. As a result, it is a good idea to install some form of protection from allowing your Wii U to perform a system update. Note: The Wii U WILL STILL UPDATE even if automatic updates are DISABLED in settings (the setting refers to game updates, not system ones).

Aroma’s PayloadLoader has a built-in update blocking feature. When it gives you the update warning screen, press X to block updates. If the screen does not show up, Hold + and - on the Boot Selector until it says: Updates blocked!

Option A: Use Tubehax
Booting into Tiramisu
Tubehax blocks Nintendo's update URLs at the DNS level to prevent system updating. To set it up, set the Primary DNS for your Wii U's wifi connection in system settings to 107.211.140.065. Leave the secondary at 0.0.0.0 or also set it to 107.211.140.065. The instructions are similar to the 3ds.

Option B: Block in your router
If you ever find the need to boot into Tiramisu, e. g. to use a Legacy homebrew app, follow these instructions.
These are the domains that need to be blocked to prevent system updates. There may be more (someone please fact check this):

*
nus.cdn.shop.wii.com

Download Tiramisu from here. Extract the contents to the root of your SD Card, merging/replacing any files if needed. Insert SD Card into your Wii U., turn it on, Boot into the Environment Loader, and use the d-pad to navigate to "tiramisu".
For the paranoid user, the Wii U can simply have no Internet connections configured.

The methods on this page will walk you through installing Aroma on your Wii U

Currently, most public Wii U exploits do not permanently modify the console to run Homebrew. Homebrew that makes permanent changes has a special notice on this wiki.

Step 2: Running the browser exploit

After putting the SD card in the Wii U make sure you are connected to the Internet. After confirming you are connected to the Internet open the Internet Browser and go to wiiuexploit.xyz . click the "Run Exploit!" button and hold the B button until a menu appears. if your Wii U is frozen wait a few seconds. if nothing happens reboot the console and reset the Browser's save data and retry this step

Step 3: Creating a NAND Backup

In case something should go wrong in later steps and the Wii U gets bricked, restoring a previous NAND backup could fix the Wii U. navigate to the "nanddumper" using the gamepad and press A to launch it. using the D-pad select Yes to the following options: SLC, SLCCMPT, OTP, SEEPROM. only select yes to MLC if you SD card is larger than 32 GB as MLC is where game data is stored. Press A to start dumping the NAND. once you have dumped the NAND turn the Wii U off and take out the SD card. copy slc.bin, slccmpt.bin, seeprom.bin, otp.bin and mlc.bin.part file to your computer. delete the file from the SD card after copying them.

Press A to launch the Aroma environment. then Press A to launch the Wii U Menu from the Aroma boot selector.

Then press A to select "Switch to PayloadLoader" After this finishes press A to shutdown the console. if you want to change the default boot title hold Start (+) on the Gamepad while booting the console
