Custom firmware, also known as CFW, is a replacement for Cafe OS and IOSU to allow homebrew applications to do more. CFW typically removes signature checks to allow custom titles to be installed, and allows emulated NANDs, known as emuNAND or redNAND. There are also sometimes custom patches.
